Make your way all the way there on the train by catching the train from Waterloo to Paris then change to the SNCF in Paris. There are "Winter Ski Train" type offers in the winter by Eurostar.

Every day there are direct trains : Paris-Lyon-Briançon, sleeper carriages both 1st and 2nd class. There is an overnight sleeper train Paris-Briançon.
